Seminar Visit: Rocian Gracie Jr. Academy – Playa de Tijuana

Our mission in Baja California began with a heartfelt visit to the Rocian Gracie Jr. Academy in Playa de Tijuana—a community academy led with purpose by purple belt Christopher Rigell and his partner Alejandra. What they’ve built is special: a welcoming, family-driven environment that already serves dozens of kids from the local municipality, with classes designed for students as young as four years old.

The moment we walked in, it was clear how much love and effort Christopher and Alejandra pour into their academy. Kids ran in smiling, parents filled the room with support, and the mats buzzed with the kind of energy only a true community hub can create.

A Day of Training, Learning, and Connection

Our visit included two classes led by Alexa Yanes, one for the younger children and one for the older kids. Alexa brought her trademark blend of patience, technique, and heart—making sure every kid felt seen, supported, and empowered.

In the third hour, Mike Calimbas jumped in to also teach the adults, bringing structure, fundamentals, and a strong emphasis on technical consistency. Seeing parents and older students train following the kids underscored the multigenerational impact even a small or new academy can have when guided by passionate leaders.

A Special Moment: Providing Gis for First-Time Students

What made this visit particularly meaningful was the opportunity to provide brand-new gis to many first-time jiu-jitsu participants. For a lot of these kids, this was their very first uniform—something they could truly call their own.

Watching their faces light up as they put on a gi for the first time is something we won’t forget. For children from under-resourced communities, even a small gesture like a uniform can make the difference between “trying a class” and feeling like they belong. We hope that these gis not only equip them to train safely but also encourage them to stay committed, grow in confidence, and find meaningful community on the mats.

Partners in Purpose

Christopher and Alejandra are doing incredible work for their neighborhood—providing structure, mentorship, and opportunity where it’s needed most. Their dedication aligns perfectly with our mission: empowering youth and underserved communities through jiu-jitsu, leadership, and positive connection.

Our time at the Rocian Gracie Jr. Academy reaffirmed what we believe deeply: when you invest in local leaders, you invest in the future of their entire community.

We are honored to support Christopher, Alejandra, their students, and the entire Playa de Tijuana family.

People are hesitant to donate to charity because the money is usually not spent how it should be. THIS is the kind of place everyone should donate to. Your donation goes directly to providing exactly what they say it will. I can’t wait to see what is in the future! PLEASE DONATE!

  4. We all had a wonderful time and learned very useful techniques. The kids are loving the Gi’s. It is amazing how happy and proud they are wearing them. And the little ones are hitting double legs they learned from Alexa in live rolls which is fun to watch. We can’t thank you all enough. Also, Mikes ankle pick variation and Alexa’s back take techniques pair well. I have used them a few times since the seminar. Definitely a nice addition to my tool box so thank you both for that. Look forward to the next time our paths cross. Keep up the excellent work.
