Guatemala & Central America – Expanding Jiu-Jitsu Across Latin America

Groundwork Foundation’s work in Guatemala grew naturally through trusted relationships built in Mexico. With the support of Top Brother and longtime collaborator Angel Hernández, Groundwork was able to connect with academies and communities throughout Central America and Latin America that are often overlooked in the global Jiu-Jitsu landscape.

While Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is deeply established in Brazil, many neighboring Latin American countries lack access to resources, equipment, and high-level instruction—even though the need and talent are just as present. These regions are often behind not because of ability, but because opportunity rarely reaches them. By stepping into these gaps, Groundwork aims to stimulate growth where it’s needed most.

In Guatemala, Groundwork has already supported local schools through gi donations, training support, and on-the-ground engagement—giving athletes and kids the tools to train, compete, and stay involved in the sport. For many, Mexico becomes the nearest stepping stone for opportunity due to shared language and access to competition, and Groundwork’s efforts help create that bridge.

This initiative extends beyond one country. Guatemala is part of a larger vision to strengthen Jiu-Jitsu throughout Central America and Latin America, with future projects already underway in Colombia and additional regions. By supporting these communities early, Groundwork helps connect South and North America through sport—creating pathways for athletes to advance to Mexico, the United States, and beyond.

Long term, this project is about access, connection, and possibility—ensuring that geography and economics don’t limit talent, and that Jiu-Jitsu can continue to grow as a unifying force across borders.
